Your Pool Deck Drain Cleanout adds a removable access door to a flat-top paver drain channel, so you can lift the cover, hose out the debris that clogs the run, and snap it back. This guide walks you through cutting the opening and seating the cover.

What You'll Need

  • Included in your package: the drain cover insert(s) + a cutting template
  • A Sharpie or pencil
  • An oscillating multitool with a wood/plastic blade (a jigsaw also works)
  • Optional: a file or 120-grit sandpaper for edge cleanup

Install in 6 Steps

  1. Choose your cutout locations. Space the drain covers evenly across the whole drain channel run.
  2. Position the template. Lay it flat on top of the drain, centered side-to-side over the slotted opening.
  3. Trace the outline with a Sharpie or pencil.
  4. Cut along the outline with the oscillating multitool. Cut slowly and let the blade do the work — and wear your safety glasses.
  5. Clean up the edges. Run a file or a fold of sandpaper along the cut to knock off burrs.
  6. Install the cover — one end at a time. It does not snap straight down:
    1. Angle one end of the cover into the cutout so that side's clip catches under the channel lip.
    2. Bow the middle of the cover up slightly (a gentle flex with your fingers).
    3. Lower the other end into the cutout so its clip slides under the lip.
    4. Press down on the center to seat both clips.

How to Use the Cleanout

Pull a cover up out of its cutout (grip the edge through the small perimeter gap). Spray a garden hose into the opening — water flows down the channel and carries debris to the drain exit. For long runs, spray in both directions. Snap the cover back in once the channel is clean.

That's the whole point: instead of a permanently sealed channel that silts up, you get a pop-out access door every few feet — so a two-minute hose-out replaces digging or snaking the whole run.

Troubleshooting

The cover won't drop straight in from above — is that normal?

Yes, that's expected. The cover installs one end at a time with a slight bow in the middle (see Step 6). It will not snap straight down.

It won't snap in even with the bow technique.

The cut is slightly too narrow or short. File the cut edges 1 mm at a time and test-fit between passes until it seats.

The cover sits higher than expected.

The cut edge is catching on the underside flange. File the underside of the cut edges until it sits flush.

The clips won't engage under the lip (narrow channel).

Your channel is narrower inside than our standard. Each end of the cover has a clip split into 3 segments — remove the 2 outer segments at each end (4 total) with pliers (grip and snap) or a rotary tool (grind). The wide center segment alone holds the cover. Test-fit before removing, since the change is permanent. (1″ inserts have a solid clip — no segments to remove.)
